2018 Newsletter

Merry Christmas friends and Family! We hope that you are all doing well and that you are enjoying the Christmas season. We wanted to give you a little update on our family and our happenings this past year.

The kids are now attending a new school, North Ogden Elementary. They love the change and have wonderful teachers this year. Evan is in 6^th grade, Makiah is in 4^th grade, and Daphne is in 1^st grade.

Evan turned 11 in January. This year he enjoyed spring league volleyball, summer horseback riding camp, Lego league this past fall and he started piano lessons a few months ago. He has really picked up on piano, and plays whenever he possibly can. He gets excited with math and science. He’s working on his science fair project now. He loved helping mom in the garden and mowing the lawn this past summer. He is a hard worker!

Makiah turned 10 in July, double digits! She started the year with gymnastics, also went to summer horseback riding camp, as well as a summer art camp. She decided to pick up a sport this fall and played basketball. We were surprised with how much she loved playing basketball! She also started playing piano and can’t get enough of it! We have music playing in our home all the time these days. Makiah is our social butterfly and loves to make new friends. She has a fun personality and loves to be goofy with friends.

Daphne turned 7 in November. She is an outgoing little girl and wants to do all the things. She loves sports. This past year she has done, gymnastics, t-ball, art camp, and basketball. She can’t wait to try new sports next year and to start piano like her big brother and sister. She is taking off learning to read at school and loves being a first grader. Daphne is so silly and loves to make us laugh and does a good job!

Dallas is still working from home for PRA Health Services. He can’t complain about the commute down the hall or going to work in his pajamas. The highlight of his year was traveling to the Baltics, Finland and Iceland with his sister Lark. He found out that he likes snorkeling in glacial lakes and that Tallinn, Estonia is his new favorite city. The trip was a great reminder of his mission to Moldova since a lot of the Baltic culture is so much like it was in Moldova. Dallas and Jessica went to Boston for a business trip. It was our first time going back East together, and even though it was cold, it was so much fun!

Jessica still loves being a stay at home mom. Last school year she subbed at her kid’s school, but it wasn’t quite what she wanted to do and with the school change this year she decided to go back to focusing on being a mom. It has been a blessing especially after having kids home sick many times this past fall and random responsibilities piling up at home. Jessica took on painting the whole basement this past spring, she loves updating our home. Some of her highlights from this past year were going on a sister’s trip to San Diego with her sisters in the spring. Jessica loves walking each day with Dallas and their new puppy and hiking whenever possible.

As a family we had some fun things going on this year. In July we went on a trip to Glacier National Park with Dallas’ Family to celebrate Dallas’ sister Sheri’s birthday. We went a little earlier than the rest of Dallas’ family and enjoyed some family time, kayaking and hiking. It was beautiful there and we definitely recommend it to anyone who has never been! We went to Jessica’s parent’s cabin several times this past summer, we love riding four wheelers and hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa in the mountains. We had a fun time visiting Dallas’ parents in Cove Fort where they are serving an LDS mission. They invited us to come to Cove Fort Days in August which was fun for us to experience with Grandma and Grandpa.  Another highlight was bringing home our first family dog, a beagle puppy that we named Finnigan! He is such a sweet pup who we just love having around. Dallas’ still isn’t so sure about having a dog, but he is such a big help with taking care of him. The kids are just in heaven finally having a pet dog. Of course there are the day to day responsibilities and concerns that come up throughout the year, but we are grateful for the good times and fun memories. 2018 has been great to us! We are so grateful for you and hope that you had a fun year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

2017 Highlights

-Evan turned 10 in January 

-Daphne broke her arm by falling while rollerskating in January. She took her first trip to the ER and had to have the bone set back into place. :(

-We sold our first home in Indiana in February. Very bitter sweet!

-The kids finished the school year right before spring break, all set to move! 

-We said goodbye to so many wonderful people and headed out on March 30th to move across the country to Utah.

-We lived with Jessica's parents in April while we searched for a new home in North Ogden.

-Makiah cut open her chin after bumping it on aunt Shannon's table. She lucked out and was able to have it glued together rather than stitches. 

-We found our new home in North Ogden Utah at the beginning of May. 

-Dallas and Jessica went to an OK GO concert in Ogden with Bethany and Sheridan.

-We bought a Kayak and went on many adventures with it. 

-The Schatzman Family lived with us in July!

-Makiah turned 9 years old.

-Jessica went to a Dashboard concert with Shannon and Kristen in July!

-Cousin Nora was born in August. 

-Lagoon with the Schatzmans in August!

-The kids started school in August at Maria Montessori Academy. Evan-5th Makiah-3rd Daphne-Kindergarten!

-Dallas and Jessica went to Wise Guys with Lark to see Don Friesen in September.

In October Makiah had her tonsils removed :(

-Daphne turned 6 in November.

2017 Trips

-Roadtrip from Indiana to Utah

-Trip to Star Valley in May to see Grandma and Grandpa Bateman. Memorial day in Bloomington ID. Cathy's 70th  birthday. Horseback riding and a trip to Idaho Falls to go to Bear World.

-We went to Disneyland in August! And the kids got to see the ocean for the first time!

-Camping at Mirror Lake with the Nichols family in August.

-Many Cabin trips.

-Dallas and Jessica took a 12 year anniversary trip to Amsterdam!

-Cove Fort in December to see Dallas' parents who are serving a mission.

2017 Visitors

-Cami helped Jessica drive the kids cross country when we moved. 

-Jason helped Dallas drive the moving truck cross country.

2016 Highlights

-Evan turning 9 in January.

-In August Makiah was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was lucky to have family who came to support her!

2016 Trips

-In January we drove to Utah for Great Grandma's Funeral. We loved spending the tail end of the holidays with family. It was wonderful to celebrate Elenore Fowler's life with extended family. We had the chance to visit Dallas's parents and Great Grandma Bateman in Star Valley on our way home.

-Jessica took a solo trip to Utah in February. She attended Joel, Alison, Darius and DeAnndra's temple sealing in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. She and Shannon took a quick trip to Zion National Park. Jessica attended the new Provo City Temple open house with her parents. 

-In May we took a family trip to Toronto (business for Dallas). We saw all the sights and then headed to Niagara Falls and then onto Palmyra New York where we met up with our friends the Hebdons to see the church sites there. 

-We went to Chicago with Grandma Bateman for Makiah's Birthday! We enjoyed seeing the American Doll Store and of course the sites around the city. 

-In June Dallas, Evan and Makiah went to see their cousin Tyson who was visiting in Tennessee. They were able to check out the Mammoth Caves!

-In September we went to southern Indiana for Labor Day weekend. We went hiking in Hoosier National Forest, and we hung out at Holiday World. 

-We enjoyed hiking Potholes, Shades State Park, and Turkey Run State Park.

-We ended the year back in Utah for Christmas! We went to look for an area to live when we move back to Utah next year. 

2016 Visitors

-Grandma Bateman came to visit for Makiah's 8th Birthday!

-Our friends the Hebdons came to visit in July!

-Grandma Johnson, Bethany, Grandpa Bateman, Candi, and Sophie came for Makiah's Baptism in August!

2015 Bateman Adventures

Evan's Highlights
-Turned 8 years old and got baptized!
-Started cub scouts and won the "Safest Driver" award at his first pinewood derby.
-Summer cub scout camp.
-Finished up 2nd grade and started 3rd grade.

Makiah's Highlights
-Ballet lessons last winter.
-Graduated from Kindergarten and started 1st grade.
-Lost her first tooth!
-Turned 7 and had an epic Spy Party with awesome friends.

Daphne's Highlights
-Started primary in the sunbeam class at church and performed in her first primary program in church.
-Started preschool this fall!
-Turned 4 years old and had Grandma Johnson here to celebrate with her.
-Dance and Cooking classes with friends.

Dallas' Highlights
-Went to Texas for a conference, and enjoyed the yummy southwestern food.
-He started taking yoga (and other classes) at a local gym.
-Planned our trip to Europe
-Learned to play the didgeridoo, pan flute, and bodhran.

Jessica's Highlights
-Turned 30 and went zip-lining with Dallas to celebrate.
-Babysat for two great families, this school year and last.
-Ran a 5K mud run with friends
-Refinished furniture (a desk, two end tables, a dining table) and built a bench and a small table for the kids.

Family Highlights
-Attended the Indianapolis Temple open house and dedication.
-The kids all did awesome with swimming lessons and now feel very comfortable in the water now that they are able to really swim.
-We worked hard in our yard to get it cleaned up (we haven't paid much attention to it until now...).
-Purdue volleyball games and a football game.
-Had a camp out in the backyard and spent multiple evenings by the fire pit roasting marshmallows.
-Dallas and Jessica celebrated 10 years of marriage!

Trips and Vacations
-Jessica and the kids took a trip to Utah in February to get out of the house. The weather was awesome there that week and Jessica got to help her sister Bethany start to plan her wedding!
-Our family went to Utah again in April and May for Bethany and Sheridan's wedding. We got to see both Johnson and Bateman families and friends.
-Jessica spent a day in Chicago with Kristen, a friend from college, and the kids enjoyed Lincoln Park Zoo with their dad.
-We visited several State parks and trails throughout the summer. We visited Indiana Dunes, Turkey Run, Shades, and Prophetstown state parks. We enjoyed hiking nearby trails including Potholes.
-Dallas and Jessica celebrated their anniversary by going to Croatia, Slovenia, and Venice.

Visitors!
We are so grateful to have such amazing friends and family who came to visit us this year. It really was wonderful having you all here. We love visitors!
-Dallas' parents, sister Candi and her girls Sophie and Chloe, Jessica's mom and sister Cami all came to be here for Evan's Baptism in January.
-Jessica's uncle Duane stopped in for a day to hang out while working in Illinois for a week. Our kids sure love him (and his buddy Floyd)!
-Jessica's sister Shannon and her kids, Sophie, Demi, and Otto came in June to visit during summer break. Our kids and hers just love their time together.
-Dallas' Parents and niece, Sophie came in September to watch the kids while Dallas and Jessica escaped to Europe for their anniversary. They were soooo amazing to come and stay for two whole weeks. We cannot thank them enough!
-Jessica's Mom came for a weekend to be with the kids on Halloween and Daphne's birthday.
-Our good friends Matt and Megan Hebdon and their kids, Madden, Maggie and Myles, came for Thanksgiving. They moved away this last summer and we were so happy to have them back for a week!
-We look forward to having Dallas' sister Lark here the week after Christmas!

2014 Newsletter

Our year in review (and because I didn't blog much at all this year, it's long!)...

Evan turned 7 in January. He loves figuring out how everything works, looking at maps, creating projects, making books, making plans, organizing just about anything... he knows how to stay busy. He is a tease, but also a big help to his two little sisters. He wants them to understand everything at his level. Evan hates having his own room. Every Friday night he and his sisters have a sleepover in the girls room, he loves being with them. This past year he has enjoyed finishing a basketball season that started the previous year and swimming lessons. In the fall he started taking Taekwondo, which has been wonderful for him. He really needed a sport that helped him as an individual, rather than trying to fit in on a competitive team.  He loves putting on his gear and practicing his forms. He also likes to count in Korean. Evan started 2nd grade this fall. He started in a high ability program, but after a quarter of school mom and dad decided to place him in a regular classroom that better fit his needs . He is SO happy in his class and has a wonderful teacher and friends. Evan has lost 5 teeth so far, by the time number 5 was loose he kept it a secret so mom and dad wouldn't try to pull it out! Evan is interested in playing the piano and is anxious to learn how to play. He teaches himself what he can and dad helps him too. This kid never gets bored and has a million questions about everything. He never stops going!

Makiah finished a year of preschool, she loved it so much! She was in a class with her best friends and her teachers were amazing. It was hard for her to say goodbye when summer came. Makiah had several good friends move away at the end of the school year. She got to celebrate her 6th birthday with one of her best friends, Brielle, before she moved to Arizona. It was a very hard day when we had to say goodbye to Brielle and her family. They moved here to Indiana the same year we did, 6 years ago, so Makiah and Brielle grew up together. Makiah loves to draw, dance and swim, she took swim lessons, gymnastics and ballet this past year and improved so much in each. Makiah started Kindergarten this fall. It is amazing how far she has come! She can now sound out words and read. She can count to 100 and solve simple math problems. Makiah is quick to find friends and has several in her class and in her friend Madden's class. They have quite the group of kids that love to be together... and are always meeting more friends that we hear about when she comes home. She is our social butterfly for sure. Although she loves friends and her teacher, the adjustment to a full day of school is catching up to her. She complains that she doesn't want to go some days and misses her mom. She loves school breaks and the time she has at home to play freely and be with her family. Summer is her favorite season. She loves the warm weather and all the fun things going on during summer. 

Oh Daphne. This girl, seriously. Some words that describe her... silly, quirky, determined, hilarious, animated, friendly, but shy at the same time. Her favorite thing to say lately is, "Just kidding!" probably because she gets a reaction from us every time. A lot of people say she looks like her mom (and I am thinking she acts like me too). Mom's nickname as a kid was The Boss and Daphne definitely lives up to that name around here! She isn't afraid to push her big brother and sister around (though we don't encourage this) and definitely takes charge. This past year Daphne watched her big brother and sister do many things and she can't wait to begin classes and sports herself. Mom is hoping she will be a little athlete with all of that energy she has built up. Daphne stays home with mom and enjoys having her buddies Maggie and Myles come and play a few times each week when mom babysits. Some days it's quite the challenge to share her mom, but she is figuring it out. Daphne has a routine she follows almost daily... she packs a lunch and begs to go to school, eats her lunch as soon as the kids leave to school (usually in front of the TV), takes mommy  upstairs to play school which usually turns into a tea party and drawing on the chalkboard. Each day Daphne draws a picture and then cuts it to pieces with scissors. She loves cutting and has gotten really good at it! When she draws she always remembers to draw ears on her people :) She can count to ten and tries to get to 20. She also tries to sing the ABC's and knows some of the letter sounds. Daphne recognizes the letter D in her name. 

Dallas continues to work at Endocyte and loves being there. This past year he received a promotion. Dallas has picked up yoga and enjoys meditating. He wants to travel the world and is busy planning a trip to Europe for our 10 year anniversary next year. He does random projects for me around the house and yard... though he doesn't necessarily enjoy the projects. But he is good at them! I picked up a part time babysitting job... which hardly even feels like a job most of the time. The kids are Daphne's little buddies and we have a fun time! I have also enjoyed playing volleyball with a coed team and for fun with a group at church. It is my "therapy" as we call it and I can't go without it. Along with volleyball I like to workout and I have been doing Insanity workouts with friends 3 times each week. It's tough, but it's great! I also enjoy documenting my families life with pictures, and am usually found snapping pictures of all our adventures.

We went on a 9-years-too-late honeymoon in October this fall to Myrtle Beach. Dallas' sister Lark came and watched the kids while we were away. It ways amazing! Dallas was actually there for a conference, so I am not sure if it counts as a honeymoon ;) I was pretty stressed the week before, dealing with some troubles at home, so it was wonderful to get away. I have never felt so relaxed in all of my life. Seriously. It was just what we needed. 

In June and July we had a fun cross country trip planned as we visited family. We stopped at Mount Rushmore, visited Dallas' sister Sheri in Powell, Wyoming, drove through Yellowstone and Jackson Hole on the way to Star Valley and spent the 4th of July at Gram's house in Bloomington Idaho for her 97th birthday. It was wonderful seeing the Bateman family and to see so many beautiful places along the way. We loved every minute. Some of our adventures along the way included sleeping in the car when we got to Mount Rushmore, because we forgot to change our hotel reservations. Kids getting carsick because we are not used to windy roads and canyons. Beautiful views on our drive because, mountains. Goodness we miss them! Shooting with aunts uncles and cousins. Swimming in a lake near the Tetons. Rafting in Star Valley. Shopping with Grandma and visiting her store. Seeing Grams in a parade on the 4th, Hiking, hiking, hiking. Because.... mountains. 

After visiting Wyoming we headed to Utah to see the Johnson Family and some of the Bateman's that live there. Some of the the adventures in Utah included meeting my first nephew on the Johnson side, baby Otto. Now my sister Shannon and I each have two girls and one boy. Our kids love playing together and spent so much time together. We stayed at my mom's house, visited my brothers and sisters, grandma Fowler and my extended family. We visited Dallas' sister Candi and saw the progress on their kitchen remodel. We hiked donut falls, went swimming, ate yummy food that I miss (Cafe Rio!), visited the Jordan River Temple where Dallas and I were married, and we went to the cabin (four wheeling and more hiking!). Makiah celebrated her birthday with Grandpa Johnson (just one day apart) before we headed back home. As always it was so hard to leave! 

We had a couple visitors this year! We love visitors (hint, hint...) Aunt Lark came in October just in time to see the leaves change color. She spent a few days watching our kids for us while we we on our trip, they were in heaven! They went to a Purdue volleyball game, practiced trick or treating, and enjoyed having a break from mom and dad. When we got back from our trip we showed Lark around Purdue Campus, downtown, ate donuts at Mary Lou's and went to a pumpkin patch. Her last day here we spent a day in Indy and had fun walking around downtown and exploring the Indianapolis Museum of Art. After she left we all kept saying how much we missed her and plotted ways to trick her into moving in with us ;) 

My uncle Duane also stopped in to see us while he was in the Chicago area for work. He came to church with us and spent the afternoon with us eating lunch and watching our first snowfall. We had a crazy cold November that he unfortunately had to experience. He brought his travel buddy, Floyd, a pink flamingo that he takes pictures of to document his travels and to share with his family. Our kids got a kick out of it and LOVED having Duane here. They seriously cried when he left. People, we love visitors!

Our family is getting good at taking road trips and we love traveling. We went on a road trip to Louisville KY for spring break. We drove down to Shades State park this fall to hike. We also loved going to the Hoosier Outdoor Experience in Indy. We visited Indianapolis with Aunt Lark when she came to visit and were able to see the progress of the temple being built there. We also love being at home and we really enjoy our neighborhood and being in our yard. The kids spend the summer outside riding bikes, swinging and playing. We love where we live.

2013 Newsletter

Just a forewarning... this is a long one. I haven't been a very good blogger this year, so I guess this makes up for it. There were so many things I hadn't blogged about yet that I couldn't leave out :)

Evan turned 6 in January. He had a surprise (family) birthday party that was really simple and low key. He loved it and kept saying that it was the best birthday ever. He enjoyed a fun year finishing up Kindergarten, playing on a soccer team, taking swim lessons, riding his bike, playing with neighbor friends, starting first grade and playing on a basketball team. He loves to learn about the world, he and his dad enjoy looking at his globe and Google maps every night before bed. He is very smart and loves school. He has a good memory and loves math. He has a fun sense of humor, he loves to laugh and make others laugh. One day he told us a joke... "Why was six afraid of 7? Because 7 is odd!" Evan is such a good big brother and is very aware of his sisters and their needs. He is always sure to give them a hug and a kiss before he leaves for the bus stop in the morning.

Makiah turned 5 in July. She loves summer time, so her summer birthday is very fitting! She spent most of the summer in her swimming suit, she loves getting wet and she enjoyed taking swim lessons. Makiah is a good helper at home and takes good care of little Daphne. She helps pick out her clothes and she plays house with her. Last spring Makiah took a dance class and was able to preform in a recital. Makiah started preschool this fall, she has so many great friends in the class that she knows from church. She has also made new friends, she loves to socialize and be around other people. Makiah took an art class this fall, she loves to create things and we are finding that she is very good at drawing. She and Daphne will sit together as Makiah draws everything Daphne asks her to. Makiah loves to pick out her own clothes and choose how I do her hair each day. She is very much a girly girl. Makiah got stitches for the first time the day after Thanksgiving. She fell and cut her forehead on our brick fireplace. She was very brave getting the stitches, we were very proud of her.

Daphne, oh goodness we love her. She turned 2 in November. Dallas and I find ourselves saying, very often, how much we just LOVE her... she is so cute, so quirky, so fun. We really can't get enough of her. We can't help but smile when we see her and hug her if she lets us. She is starting to talk a lot so it just makes things that much more entertaining. Just the other day she was carrying on a "conversation" with Dora and Boots on a toy phone. Daphne loves babies (real or pretend), dogs (again, real or pretend), Dora and Boots, baby Jesus and the toy nativity, eating, watching movies or playing on any device she can get her hands on, playing pretend, saying "hiya" on the phone, talking to family on the webcam, pointing out things she sees while we drive and playing outside... especially on swings. Daphne is tough. She isn't afraid to pick on her older siblings, but she is quick to say sorry and always shows love. Daphne loves to share. She never stops to think if she should share or not. She is very willing to give up a toy, as long as the person is kind and asks first.

Dallas and I worked hard this year updating our house. We have loved living here this past year. We have painted nearly every room (we still have two to go and the laundry room) We also painted all the doors, and trim. We updated doorknobs, light switches, outlets, and light fixtures. We took down a half wall and installed wood laminate flooring throughout the majority of our main floor. We painted the cabinets in our kitchen and installed new shelves in the pantry. We still have the half bath to finish, but that is on hold for now. It was (is) quite the project, but we are glad we did it. Our house is now looking like the place we hoped for and we are just loving it. We have learned A LOT this past year from all the projects we did. We had a ton of help from friends. We couldn't have done it without them, that is for sure (thank you!!!)

Aside from the work on the house I have had a blast this year playing volleyball. It is by far my favorite thing to do these days. I have played on coed teams, a women's team and just for fun at church with friends. Dallas and I have started calling it my "therapy" (ha!), because I really REALLY can't go without it. I have also had the chance to do some random fun photography shoots for friends which is also a fun outlet for me. I am not back in business with photography, but I am enjoying it just as a hobby.

Dallas has had a lot of excitement at work. Endocyte is getting ready to have their first drug on the market in Europe, so it has been busy for everyone to get things ready. As a result of the research done there, Dallas will be a co-author on a journal article (his first publication) and an abstract for a nuclear medicine conference. He works hard to earn all that money so he can one day go on the 23 vacations around the world that he has planned. One of the more reasonable trips came true in August when he flew out to see his brother, Shane, in California. He had a business trip near Los Angeles and decided to stop by to extend the trip to be with the California Batemans. The highlight of the trip was riding the Goliath rollercoaster with his nephew Brayden at Magic Mountain. Dallas also bought himself a bodhran (a traditional Irish drum). He has had a lot of fun learning how to play along with some Irish songs.

We went on some fun trips this year. The first was to Utah in July and August. The kids and I flew out to see family and stayed for almost three weeks. It was low key... we stayed with my parents, helped my mom get started with her new job as a teacher, had a fun sleepover at my sister Shannon's new house, went to my parents cabin for one night and enjoyed the four wheelers. We had a BBQ with my extended Johnson family one night and I was able to see a lot of aunt's, uncles and cousins that I haven't seen in years. We also had a BBQ with my extended Fowler family at my Grandma Fowler's home. We were able to see Dallas' sister Candi's new home and we visited with Dallas' sister Sheri, who drove down from Wyoming, while we were there. The kids had a fun sleepover with their cousin's Sophie and Chloe. We had lunch with the Bateman's at Zuppas and were able to see most of the Bateman's that day, including Dallas' parents and Grams who came down from Wyoming. Dallas surprised us on our layover in Phoenix on our flight home. He was on his way home from visiting his brother Shane and his family in California. We were all able to fly back to Indiana together, which was wonderful.

We were also lucky to be able to go on a trip with Dallas' parents and Grandma in September. We met them in Lancaster, Pennsylvania after Dallas and I took our kids to Kirtland Ohio to see the LDS church history sites there. Dallas' mother grew up in Lancaster, so we were able to visit her home town. It was a fun week, we enjoyed Hershey park, visiting family, a train ride at the Strasburg Railroad, the Choo Choo Barn and Amish country. We loved how green and beautiful it was out there, the country was neat and relaxing. The kids loved having so much time with their grandma and grandpa and Grams. It was a wonderful vacation.

Phew! Wow. It's crazy to go through a whole year like that.... so much to remember! We are grateful for all of the experiences we had this past year. We are also grateful for all the wonderful people in our lives. Thank you for your friendship, we love you!
